Land Grabs in Africa: Towards a more sustainable approach

Γράφτηκε από Menelaos Agaloglou
Large scale acquisitions of land in developing countries by multinational or foreign governments have attracted widespread attention in the global media and have sparked a dynamic debate. On the one hand is the argument that agriculture in developing countries especially in Africa crucially needs investment and that the sector has been neglected by peasants, politicians and businesses alike. On the other hand there are arguments against the process that see it as neo-colonial policy where food is being transported from poor countries, where a large per cent of the population is malnourished, to rich nations. The purpose of this brief report is to present the main arguments of both sides, and argue that a more sustainable approach is needed.

Iran’s Euphoric Presidential Elections: Is Rapprochement Possible?

Γράφτηκε από Dr. Gholam R. Vatandoust
The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has frequently remarked that Iran is among the most democratic countries, with open and fair elections since its inception thirty-four years ago. The claim that Iran is a vibrant democracy is based on the fact that Iranians have gone to the ballot box on multiple occasions, voting for presidents, parliamentarians and city council members. The presidential election of June 14th with nearly 73% of the electorate participating is a case in point. However, what makes the Iranian elections non-democratic is the vetting of candidates by the Council of Guardians, consisting of twelve members, six of whom are clerics appointed by the Supreme Leader while the other six are jurists selected by the Parliament.[1] All are conservatives and all profess their loyalty and allegiance to the Supreme Leader.

Israel, the United States and Iran in front of Crucial Decisions

Γράφτηκε από Zaki Shalom
It is almost certain that within the coming months, maybe even the coming weeks, the question of Iran will be determined one way or another. The present course of a dialogue between the five great powers and Germany and Iran has not led as of now to any significant results. There were recently two rounds – one in Istanbul the other – in Bagdad. Another round of talks will be held in the near future in Moscow. 1

President Obama's State of the Union Address, January 24, 2012: Between Realities and Aspirations

Γράφτηκε από Zaki Shalom
Obama's State of the Union address on January 24, 2012 was devoted mainly to United States' current socio-economic problems. This focus on United States internal problems should come as no surprise. It is clear that the severe economic crisis that engulfs the United States these days is the highest priority of the American people.

Twenty Years Since the First Gulf War- Achievements and Failures

Γράφτηκε από Zaki Shalom
The decision of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein to invade Kuwait in the summer of 1990 confronted the Bush Administration with a critical test. The question under examination was not merely the valid conquest of Kuwait by Iraq but also the larger issue of the international territorial status quo. Since the end of the Second World War, the international community has been operating under a rather general consensus: The status quo that was created after the war should be accepted by all nations. States might have aspirations to change the existing status-quo. However, any change could be achieved only by peaceful means.

Tribes and Tribalism in the Arab Spring

Γράφτηκε από Khaled Fattah
From Iraq in the north down to the Arabian Peninsula and west all the way to Morocco, tribal values have had a strong influence on shaping the political culture and state-society relations in the Middle East. Historians remind us that throughout the span of the Middle East’ history, tribes have often posed a credible threat to central governments, and have played an important role in the making and dismantling of ruling dynasties.

The role of Turkey in the Syrian crisis and the challenges it faces

Γράφτηκε από Aref Alobeid
The presence of the USA in Iraq, the threats by former US defense minister Donald Rumsfeld in 2003 against Syria, Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party coming to power in Turkey, the isolation of the Syrian regime due to the cold relations with Lebanon’s and Jordan’s governments and the economic cooperation with Syria were the main causes of strengthening the relations between Turkey and Syria during the period 2003-2010[1]. However, the spread of the Arab Spring in Syria cast a shadow over the good relations between Ankara and Damascus. As a result, reservation and suspicion obscured the communication between the two states.

The time factor in a-symmetrical wars, lessons from the Second Lebanon War

Γράφτηκε από Zaki Shalom
In his first appearance before the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee , the Israel's newly appointed Chief of Staff Benny Gantz, declared that in future military confrontations with either Hezbollah or Hamas, the rules of war that have existed until now will dramatically change. The Chief of Staff stressed that the IDF will have to use overwhelming intensive firepower against these enemies in the first stages of the confrontation.

Netanyahu's visit to the United States and the Future of the Israeli-Palestinian Peace Process

Γράφτηκε από Zaki Shalom
Like all his previous visits to the United States, Netanyahu's recent visit to Washington looked like a wrestling match - partly visible, partly invisible - between him and Obama. The roots of the rivalry between the two leaders are embedded primarily in their different concepts regarding the sources of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the ways needed to resolve it.

Bahrain: Let's talk about sect

Γράφτηκε από Tahiyya Lulu
"This was an affluent crowd, far different from the mostly low-income Shiites who took to the streets to demand a constitutional monarchy, an elected government and a representative Parliament. The air was scented with perfume, and people drove expensive cars," writes Michael Slackman of the New York Times[i], describing a pro-status government self-described, "Unity" demonstration held in Bahrain on Monday. With repeated reference to Bahrain's sectarian divide in local and international media (some variation of the tagline "Bahrain has a 70% Shia population ruled by a Sunni ruling family" has rolled along the ticker of almost every major TV news network), and anti-government protesters insisting on Shia-Sunni unity (a cry also parroted by pro-government crowds), it's worthwhile then to trail this mysterious scent a little further.
