Zakia Aqra (Ph.D Candidate)

Zakia Aqra has obtained a MSC in Middle East Politics at SOAS, London, (2014); her master thesis was on the foreign policy of the PLO/PA. For her second MSc in International Political Economy at Panteion University of Social and Political Studies, Athens (2015), she was awarded a scholarship from the Onassis Foundation (2014-2015) to conduct primary field research on the development assistance of Greece to the Palestine Liberation Organisation and the Palestinian Authority (PLO/PA). She completed her BSc in International and European Studies at Panteion University, Athens, for which she was granted a full-scholarship from the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2005-2011). She is fluent in English, Greek, Arabic, and Italian and she has worked for several years as a translator/interpreter. As an expert in middle eastern cultural, religious, social and political affairs, Zakia Aqra has worked with refugees in Greece as an intra-cultural mediator and interpreter with foreign journalists and news outlets across Europe, but also with NGOs, including the Ecumenical Refugee Programme- of the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of Greece- an implemented partner of UNHCR. She is a research expert at the Centre for Religious Pluralism in the Middle East - CRPME – a Greek MFA initiative. She is a research associate at the Centre for Mediterranean, Middle East and Islamic Studies (CEMMIS) since April 2010.
