As Israel normalizes relations with the Arabsphere, can the Palestinians revive the Palestinian Question?

palestine abbas clock ticking for palestineIsrael’s normalizing relations with various Arab countries brought the Palestinians once again before the bitter realization that time is working against them. It appears that this realization triggered a process of reconciliation among the Palestinians. Yet, will these efforts suffice to influence the course of the Palestinian Question within a rapidly changing regional environment?

The Palestinian question and the Trump presidency: current developments

The Palestinian question and the Trump presidency: current developments

palestine trump thumbsupAmong the promises the U.S. President Donald J. Trump has made is the formulation of a plan to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian issue. To that end, the task was assigned to Jared Kushner, senior adviser to the White House and his son-in law.[1] However, the details of the plan known as the “Deal of the Century” are yet to be released. In the meantime, recent developments, generated by the actions taken by the U.S. administration and their implications on the both Israel and Palestine need to be taken seriously into consideration, as they directly influence the already fragile situation on the ground.

Netanyahu's visit to the United States and the Future of the Israeli-Palestinian Peace Process

Like all his previous visits to the United States, Netanyahu's recent visit to Washington looked like a wrestling match - partly visible, partly invisible - between him and Obama. The roots of the rivalry between the two leaders are embedded primarily in their different concepts regarding the sources of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the ways needed to resolve it.

Elias Khoury, Gate of the Sun, New York: Picador, 2007

Elias Khoury, Gate of the Sun, New York: Picador, 2007

The mere narration of these stories reflects the Palestinians’ rigid persistence of memory -to re-call and to remember- given that the past can conceal the present and disregard the future. Elias Khoury’s stories explain why Palestinians have either the need or are forced to remember; for some Palestinians, Palestine is more the actual memory of it rather than the land. So keeping Palestine alive in their memory is keeping themselves alive. The stories unfold the part of history which has never been written, trapped with emotions that conflict creates which encapsulate and explain today’s’ tart reality. Reminiscence is a bittersweet comfort and nostalgia has become part of the Palestinian identity in a struggle to survive.
